How to make fused glass jewelry with recycled bottles

Fusing Glass for Beginners

Hello,

How is your July going? If you are in the US let me wish you a happy 4th of July! I hope you are enjoying some sunshine and tasty grilled food before viewing some celebratory fireworks. We will probably be hiding in our basement as one of our pups is terrified of the popping sounds that have already preceded the actual holiday, but I am sure we will still enjoy a fire grilled hot dog or two.

It has been a pretty busy summer so far as we are in the process of purchasing a property in Arizona and I admit that it has been more than a little bit distracting. As a result I have not been spending as much time in the lab as I would like.

On top of the hectic nature of all the steps that must be navigated ie: finding a house, making an offer, having an inspection and appraisal and signing mountains of paperwork, there is also an emotional toll.  It is exciting and fun but also stressful and bitter sweet. We are midway through the process so nothing is certain yet and we will have to wait and see what happens next.

In the mean time I have at least finished one new project and video to share.

How to melt glass in your microwave

For this project I used the Fuseworks microwave kiln to make some new earring styles. I have a lot of small scrap sized pieces loft over from my other projects that I wanted to use. My newest video introduces some new designs and techniques for making jewelry with the microwave kiln and some of these smaller pieces of glass.

I just can’t say what a fun tool this is to have! I admit that I was a little intimidated by the price when I bought it but I keep finding new projects to make in the kiln. If you want more specific information about the kiln I have done a review of it here.

But let’s get on with it. As I mentioned before today’s project uses some of the smallest pieces of glass. You can see the before and after fusing in the pictures above. If you buy the kiln kit you will receive some glass pieces to get you started but I have been using mostly bottle glass for my projects.
